Differential Measurements

When a wound occurs, bacteria enter the exposed tissue almost immediately. The body detects these bacteria through chemical signals released by damaged cells. These signals spread through the tissue and form a gradient that white blood cells can sense. Neutrophils are often the first responders. They move toward stronger signals by extending their shape forward and pulling the rest of the cell along. As neutrophils travel, they squeeze between tissue layers to reach the bacteria. The closer they
