In 1891, Arthur Conan Doyle was saved by Sherlock. Ten years earlier, Doyle had stepped off a boat in Portsmouth with than £10 to his name. His degree was in medicine, but his dream was to write. So, between appointments, he wrote. From March to April of 1886, sitting at his kitchen table, Doyle finished A Study in Scarlet in three weeks. He sent it to James Payn at the Cornhill Magazine. Rejected. Arrowsmith’s received it in May and returned it unread in July. Warne turned it down immediately.
