At Kyoto’s Kegonji Temple, also known as Suzumushi (Bell Cricket) Temple, the air is alive with the chirping of the approximately 2,000 bell crickets that call it home. Their residence began with the temple priest who, inspired by their tranquil song 🎵, felt a sense of enlightenment. He spent nearly 30 years researching and breeding these crickets, normally seen only from late summer through fall, so visitors could hear them year-round.
